Pre-dating the larger Great Pyramid of Giza by a couple of hundred years, the Pyramid of Djoser was the first built in Egypt, and the earliest large scale construction in the world to be built of cut stone. The city boomed following the discovery of gold in 1848, and quickly became the largest city on the west coast. Rotterdam is one of the few thoroughly modern cities in Holland, offering adventuresome modern architecture and delightful culture.
